Copper Nickel (CuNi) alloys are widely used in marine and industrial applications in Seawater applications.

This is due to their:

  • Excellent resistance to seawater corrosion
  • Good fabrication qualities, and
  • Natural antifouling properties. CuNi is one of the very few alloys with natural Antifouling properties.
  • Proven more lower economic cost on a life cycle cost basis.

Copper Nickel has provided reliable service for several decades whilst offering effective solutions to today’s technological challenges.

CuNi seawater systems are common in many industries such as shipping (both Naval and Commercial), offshore oil and gas production, power stations, desalination plants and other coastal industrial plants. The main use of seawater is for cooling purposes, fire-fighting, Bilge and Ballast waters, Heat Exchangers, etc.

Copper Nickels mechanical properties allow them to be produced in a vast range of product forms and are readily fabricated even into the most complicated designs. The most commonly used Copper Nickel is 90/10 which in very simple terms is 90% Copper and 10% Nickel (other metals do form a small part of the mix). 90/10 Copper Nickel is most commonly notated as 90/10 CuNi.

It is relevant to note that most of the world's navies have decided to use 90/10 CuNi as a standard for piping in surface vessels due to the quality outcomes and long terms costs effectiveness achieved. Due to CuNi becoming more widely available worldwide this also means sources for supply of material are easily accessible.
